Where did you grow up and what did you enjoy so much about it that it made you come back after uni?
I grew up in Yackandandah, and was lucky enough to have the outdoors right on my doorstep. I spent most of my childhood fishing in the creek, riding my mountain bike and chasing sheep around the paddock. It wasn’t really until I moved to Melbourne and experienced the frenetic pace of city life that I realised how much I missed that side of life, and all the hobbies I had taken for granted growing up.
The classic – what got you into Osteopathy?
My path towards osteopathy was anything but straight. I went from political science and international security, to exercise science, to physiotherapy, before eventually making my way to osteopathy. Needless to say, my dad wasn’t particularly impressed with all the degree changes! What really drew me to osteopathy was the help I received from an osteopath while dealing with a recurrent shoulder injury. The combination of hands-on treatment, exercise rehabilitation and education really helped me feel more in control of my recovery.
Have you had any serious injuries?
I’ve had a few! My shining gem would have to be rupturing my bicep and chest and dislocating my shoulder while getting tackled during footy. Not exactly an injury I’d recommend doing.
What rehab did you do and what are you doing now to prevent them from happening again?
My rehab essentially consisted of a lot of stability and strength work in the gym. Ironically, that time in the gym was a big turning point for me. I fell in love with the process of using strength and rehabilitation to improve how the body moves and performs. I basically do the same sort of work to this day to maintain my shoulders integrity so I can continue to perform.
What have you enjoyed about your time thus far at Sports & Spinal Albury Wodonga Corowa?
There is a lot to love, so I have to break it down into a list!
The clients and patients: Everyone has been incredibly welcoming, always up for a chat and genuinely interested in getting to know me. They’re also fantastic with their exercise compliance, so I’ve already had the opportunity to see some great results in the short time I’ve been here.
The clinic: The clinic is so well equipped and laid out that I never have to look far for anything I need. It allows me to be efficient and focus on treating.
The team: I’ve learnt so much from every clinician here. Everyone is willing to share their expertise and knowledge, which has allowed me to continuously learn and improve as a practitioner.
What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?
I spend most of my time at the gym training, but there are a few other things I enjoy when I find some spare time.I have to say fishing is probably my favourite. There’s something about being out in the bush by a river that makes it my favourite place in the world. Otherwise, I’m pretty happy just relaxing at home reading or watching a movie.
What is your favourite sport and sporting team?
I love footy (AFL) and cricket, so my favourite teams would have to be the Melbourne Demons and the Australian Test team.
Is there anything else we should know about you?
My big dream in life is to publish a novel or series. I’ve got a few ideas on the go and I’m slowly working my way through one at the moment. Hopefully one day it could be good enough for the world to read.
